Case Study- Coronary Artery Bypass Graft

Rationale

Coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) is an invasive and highly successful form of treatment for patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Each year, over 300,000 procedures are performed in the United States. It relieves ischemia by improving myocardial perfusion beyond areas of coronary stenosis. Partial or complete relief of angina is seen in over 90 percent of these cases.

Objectives

After completing this case study the learner should be able to:
  1. Define key terms: (key terms are linked to glossary)
Angina pectoris
Atherosclerosis
Cardiopulmonary Bypass (CBP)
Central Venous Pressure (CVP)
Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG)
Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)
Internal Mammary Artery (IMA)
Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP)
Ischemia
Positive End Expiratory Pressure (PEEP)
Pulmonary Artery Diastolic (PAD)
Pulmonary Vascular Resistance (PVR)
Saphenous Vein Graft (SVG)
Static Compliance
  1. Systemic Vascular Resistance (SVR)
  2. Identify reasons for CABG.
  3. Explain procedure involved in CABG.
  4. State the complications of a CABG.
  5. Identify the rationale for IABP.
  6. Explain the use of CPB during CABG.
  7. Explain the significance of measured pressures.
  8. Identify risks of using PEEP vs high FIO2's.
