Management of Acute Renal Failure

The goal in the management of ARF is to correct and maintain renal perfusion and to eliminate drugs that are nephrotoxic from the treatment. Intravenous fluids and blood volume expanders are given to the hypotensive patient to correct renal perfusion. A potent loop diuretic such as furosemide is given if attempts to improve renal blood flow do not increase urinary output. Hyperkalemia occurs in ARF, therefore, potassium restriction as well as active intervention may be required. Another primary supportive treatment of ARF is renal dialysis.
