Module 2 Activity - Barriers to Healthy Living

Objective: Discuss the external factors that create barriers to accessing health care and engaging in healthy behaviors

1. Read the following

2. Watch the videotape scenarios of individuals with psychiatric disabilities discuss their experience in obtaining general medical care. The video clips will open in another window. Close the window when you are finished. The length of the clip is given. Please note the longer files may take a few minutes to download.

3. Complete one of the following activities to appreciate external barriers to health. If you have used public transportation within the past 2 weeks or were eligible and using food stamps in the past month you may write about one of these experiences for the assignment.

Public transportation
If public transportation is available use it to get to an appointment. Take note of issues such as safety, convenience, exposure, frustration etc. during the activity.

Food Stamps
Go to http://www.fns.usda.gov/fsp/applicant_recipients/fs_Res_Ben_Elig.htm and calculate how much money you would have per day based on your family size. Feed yourself and family if applicable, for one day on a food stamp budget without using any ingredients you have on hand. Consider you and your family’s satiety, achieving a balanced diet and variety of food choices when completing this activity.
