Module 2 Activity - Synopsis: Incidence of Health Promotion

Objective: Compare health risks for people with psychiatric disabilities with those of the general population

Instructors: Edna Hamera and Debra Sullivan

Directions:

1. Read the following which provides an overview of health risk for people with psychiatric disabilities:

Dixon et al. (1999) The association of medical comorbidity in schizophrenia with poor physical and mental health. Journal of Nervous and Mental Diseases. 187, 496-502.

2. This learning activity involves researching the background on the topic for your group's health promotion session. The following steps will help you do this:

a. Identify the incidence/prevalence of the problem as background for your assigned health promotion session. Since your health promotion session is specific you need to formulate a problem statement and then identify concepts that are relevant in searching databases for articles. Faculty will assist you in identifying concepts to search in your group discussion. For discipline specific topics the course faculty member from the discipline will help. Their email addresses are listed in the course syllabus. Also it maybe helpful to refer to the list of topics you ranked, find the heading for your topic and use these words in searching databases.

b. The OVID and PubMed are the preferred databases to search. To effectively use these databases you need to identify mesh terms to help you refine your search. Go to http://library.kumc.edu/instruction/index.html#tutorials and complete the tutorials for OVID or PubMed so you can learn to identify mesh terms and how to narrow them down to terms that fit your topic.

c. In your search you will most likely find intervention studies. These may not help you for this assignment because they do not usually describe the incidence or extent of the issue in individuals with psychiatric disorders. Retain them for Module 4 Activity - Literature Search & Review: Identifying and Evaluating a Published Health Promotion Study or Program Description.

Example:

If your topic is promoting leisure activities, your problem statement might be "What is the frequency and quality of leisure activities in people with psychiatric disabilities?" You search OVID under leisure activities with chronic mental illness and schizophrenia and find the related concepts, quality of life, social competence and social skills. Some of the studies you find are intervention studies. They are only helpful if they provide data on the incidence/prevalence of the problem in the background section.

Assignment: Your group is to prepare a 2 page synopsis which covers the following:

1) the incidence of the medical condition or health behavior in individuals with psychiatric disabilities,
2) differences in incidence by gender, race, age and ethnicity, if available,
3) reliability of the incidence data, e.g. sample size, diversity, etc.
4) identification of the possible etiological explanations for high or low incidence, and
5) comparison of the incidence with incidence described in the general population in Healthy People 2010 at www.healthypeople.gov/document

Negotiate within your group how you will accomplish this task and who will prepare the 2- page summary. Email your synopsis to Edna Hamera

Evaluations Criteria

Evaluation Synopsis: Incidence of HP Topic Points

Identify incidence of topic in individuals with psychiatric disabilities using source(s) relating differences by gender, race, age and ethnicity if available.

8=searches and finds best source(s) for topic

4=limited search of sources for topic and quotes incidence accurately

0= no search for sources of topic and incidence.

8

Critique the incidence data you find, i.e. size, diversity, setting of sample. Ex. Can the incidence data be generalized to all individuals with psychiatric disabilities?

8= accurately identifies all relevant strengths and weakness of the incidence data.

4-accurately identifies a few of the relevant strength and/or weakness of the incidence data.

0=does not address the reliability of the incidence data

8

Discuss hypotheses explaining the incidence in individuals with psychiatric disabilities.

8=Evaluates the relevance of the etiologies offered to explain the incidence in individuals with psychiatric disabilities

4= Relates the etiologies but does not evaluate their relevance.

0= Does not address the possible etiologies for the incidence in individuals with psychiatric disabilities

8

Compare the incidence you found in individuals with psychiatric disabilities with the incidence data for the general population given in Healthy People 2010

8=Accurately compares the incidence with that found in Healthy People 2010

4=compares incidence with limited or inaccurate data from healthy People 2010

0=Makes no comparison with Healthy People 2010

8
