Module 3 Activity - Identify and Analyze a Health Promotion Model of Individual Behavior

Objective: Select a health promotion model of individual behavior that is appropriate to your health promotion session (selected topic for final project).

Instructors: Karen Williams

Directions:

1. Read Chapters 1 and 2 from Glanz, K., Rimer, B. & Lewis, F (2002). Health Behavior and Health Education: Theory, Research and Practice. Ed 3. San Francisco: Jossey-Bass. (see hyperlink).

2. After reading these materials, consider the health promoting behavior that you discussed in Module 1 (the behavior that is not currently a part of your routine). Using this same behavior for this module, analyze what precedent factors might facilitate or impede your actual change and ability to sustain the behavior over time? Post a brief analysis of the target behavior, precedent factors which are likely to influence your success or failure, and what critical factors might influence maintenance of the behavior. (Due 3/20)

3. Read each of the following articles (available on-line at the internet addresses indicated):

Elder JP. Theories and Intervention Approaches to health-Behavior Change.
At: http://www.cacr.ca/news/2002/0212elder.htm

Samuelson M. Stages of Change: From Theory to Practice. At: http://www.hivinfo.org/docs/pdf/stages.pdf
(Note: Can be viewed as an HTML file)

4. Each individual is responsible for posting a brief analysis of the similarities and differences between three models of health behavior (Health Belief, Theory of Reasoned Action/ Theory of Planned Behavior, Social Cognitive Theory) and the Transtheoretical /Stages of Change model described in the readings. Make sure your analysis demonstrates an understanding of the core concepts that are shared and important differences in assumptions of the model. (Due 3/28)

5. The Stages of Change Model will serve as the theory for your health promotion session (final project topic). Discuss as a group how the model can be used to planning health promotion activities for your health promotion session (final project topic) for individuals with SPMI. (Due 3/20-3/26)

6. Go to the discussion

Evaluation Criteria:

Evaluation of Models of Individual Health Behavior
Points

Describe the relationship between the precedent factors that facilitated or impeded your attempt or success with behavior change, your actual behavioral change and your ability to sustain the behavior over time.

10 = Precedent factors are logically linked to stated behavior change and relationship among factors as they relate to sustainability of change is clear and concise.
5 = Precedent factors identified but not linked to stated behavior change or sustainability issues are not explicated.
0 = No factors identified or linked to stated behavior change.

10

Brief analysis of the similarities and differences between the Health Belief, Theory of Reasoned Action/ Theory of Planned Behavior and the target model, Transtheoretical and Stages of Change).

15 = Core components of models are compared to Transtheoretical Model. Analysis includes important similarities and differences.
8 = Core components of models are compared to Transtheoretical Model. Analysis is incomplete or misses important similarities and differences.
0 = Analysis of theories does not include core concepts or similarities/differences are missing.

15

Individual participation in discussion on application of Transtheoretical Model demonstrates thoughtful consideration of how the model is consistent with the group’s health promotion session (final project topic) for individuals with SPMI.

10 = Concepts of theory are related and show direct link to selected session topic for individuals with SPMI.
6 = Discussion of theory is inconsistent with topic but individual has demonstrated a acceptable link to selected session topic for individuals with SPMI.
0 = Discussion of application of theory to topic is illogical.
