Module 4 Activity - Literature Search & Review: Identifying and Evaluating a
Published Health Promotion Study or Program Description

Objectives:

    1. Perform a search of the literature (using Medline, PubMed etc) for health intervention studies that have been published in peer-reviewed, scientific journals.
    2. Identify one published health intervention study that is relevant to the session topic
    3. Provide a written summary and evaluation of the study selected

Instructors: Tana Brown, Karen Williams, Marne Sherman

Directions:

1. Go to an academic library or library website and perform a literature search for published health intervention studies. Attempt to find all studies relevant to your session topic including:

    1. Intervention studies of people with psychiatric disabilities on your health promotion topic
    2. Intervention studies of people with psychiatric disabilities on other health promotion topics
    3. Intervention studies on your health promotion topic with other relevant populations (e.g., people with brain injury, etc.)

2. Select the one study from the above categories that you feel is most relevant to your session topic. The study must describe an evaluation of a health intervention.

3. If you would like to make sure that the study you have selected is appropriate, you may email the title of the article to Dr. Sherman (email address listed below) along with a copy of the article's abstract. Dr. Sherman will email you within 24 hours with feedback on your selected article. If you have difficulty locating or selecting an article, you may email Dr. Sherman WELL IN ADVANCE of the assignment deadline, and she will assist you.

4. Once you have selected an article to review, obtain a full-length copy of the article (note: you will be submitting a copy of the article with your final assignment, so you may wish to obtain or print two copies at this time).

5. Write and post a 2-page summary and evaluation of your selected study. In your summary, (A) describe the target study population, the health promotion topic, and the intervention utilized. (B) Describe what the author identifies as the benefits of the program and the supporting evidence for those benefits. (C) List three strengths and three weaknesses of the intervention/program as they relate to your target population and session topic.

6. Email or mail a copy of the full article to Dr. Sherman at:
