Introduction

The entire semester will focus on developing a health promotion session for people with psychiatric disabilities. Most of the assignments will be included as part of the final project and some of the assignments are focused more on increasing your awareness of the challenges faced by people with psychiatric disabilities.

Module 1 - Rethinking Psychiatric Disabilites

This module requires planning ahead because you need to identify and interview a person who has a psychiatric disability.  In addition you will learn about recovery concepts by applying them to an  experience from your past.

Module 2 - Health Risk in Individuals with Psychiatric Disabilities

This modules involves more work and planning than module 1.  The readings are more difficult and you will be working in your small group to search research studies and prepare a background summary on the topic assigned for your health promotion session.  In addition you need to plan ahead to implement and report on one barrier to healthy living commonly experienced by individuals with psychiatric disabilities.

Module 3 - Models of Health Promotion

This module will involve selecting an Individual Health Promotion Model and learning the Social Cognitive Model. These two models will be applied to your final project. You will also identify educational strategies/activities that will be relevant and useful for this population. The entire module is completed as group work and will require several postings to keep the group work flowing.

Module 4 - Program Development

This module involves some group work and some individual assignments. You will be creating accommodations using learning theories and constructing instructional objectives to be used in your final project. You will need to find a research article on a Health Promotion intervention, preferably one conducted in this population, and submit the abstract for approval before completing the assignment. Please plan ahead and be prepared for the due date for submission of the article abstract.
