Course Description:

The course emphasizes development of wellness programs built on recovery philosophy and health promotion models. Factors relevant to the adoption of healthy behaviors in individuals with psychiatric disabilities are explored. Students have the opportunity to partner with interdisciplinary groups including students with psychiatric disabilities in designing health promotion programs that meet the needs of the population.

Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the students will be able to:

  1. Value recovery philosophy in promoting wellness.
  2. Examine internal and external factors that enhance and impede adoption of healthy behaviors.
  3. Analyze health promotion models in the context of individuals with psychiatric disabilities.
  4. Design an interdisciplinary health promotion session for individuals with psychiatric disabilities.

Methodology:

This 2 credit hour Internet course will use online discussion, readings, and learning activities to accomplish objectives. Students will work in small interdisciplinary groups to design a health promotion session.

Evaluation:

The course is divided into four modules. Each module incorporates a series of individual and group learning activities that are graded. See individual modules for the specific assignments and grading criteria. The course also includes a final project in which each small group designs a health promotion session.


Grading

The assignments for each module will be graded by the faculty assigned to that module. There are some activities that will not be graded; however, all activities must be completed for the student to receive a passing grade. Some assignments are to be done individually and some are to be done in small groups. When an assignment is noted as an individual assignment, you are expected to do all of the work on your own.

Each module includes assignments worth a total of 100 points and there are four modules for a total of 400 points. The final project is worth 100 points. Peer Evaluation is worth 100 points.

Peer Evaluation - 100 points

Example:

If there are 5 people in your group – you would evaluate 4 people because you do not evaluate yourself. You would distribute the 100 points among those 4 people. If you think everyone contributed equally, you would give everyone 25 points. However, if people contributed at different levels you might give one person 35, two people 25 and another person 15. Whatever you decide, the total needs to add to 100.
