Bone & Joint Structure: Carpals

The carpometacarpal joints are the articulations between the distal row of carpals and the bases of the first through fifth metacarpals. The first carpometacarpal joint is the articulation between the first metacarpal and the trapezium. This articulation is a saddle joint, the first metacarpal is convex anterior/posterior and concave medial/lateral. The second metacarpal articualtes primarily with the trapezoid and secondarily with the trapezium and capitate. The third metacarpal articulates with the capitate. The fourth metacarpal articulates with the capitate and hamate and the fifth metacarpal articulates with the hamate.
