The frequency of heart sounds and murmurs ranges from 50 to 500 cycles per second.

According to their frequency, murmurs are classified as soft (low frequency) and harsh (high frequency). Harsh murmurs are more likely to be organic, but this criterion is not very sensitive: many valvular regurgitant lesions generate soft rather than harsh murmurs.
