At the University of Kansas School of Medicine, the Senior medical student is required to complete a selective in critical care and a sub-internship, each of which are 4 week rotations. The Senior student also has elective time and may choose to spend that time on Surgery rotations. This page reviews the offerings which satisfy the required rotations and elective time.

REQUIRED ROTATIONS

Rotations which fulfill the Critical Care Selective  and are offered through the Surgery Clerkship are: Burn Unit and Surgical (Trauma) Intensive Care Unit.

Rotations offered through the Surgery Clerkship which fulfill the Sub-internship requirement and have been utilized by students in the past are: General Surgery, (KUMC Surgery team: Surgical Oncology, Min Inv GI/Acute Care and Trauma/Critical Care/Bariatric), Urology (KUMC or KCVAMC), Orthopedic Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, and General Surgery-Leavenworth VAMC.

All of the specialties of Surgery are available for rotations which would satisfy the Sub-internship requirement, but those which have not been utilized in the past must be approved through the Surgery Education Office at least one month in advance of the beginning of the rotation. (This is so that coordination with the 3rd year clerkship is optimized so as to prevent "overload" of a popular service/rotation).

The Sub-internship in Surgery is intended for the Senior medical student who wishes to experience greater patient care responsibilities than were available as a 3rd year student and to allow exploration of that field as a potential career choice for the student. The Surgery Sub-internships emphasize care of patients with complex and acute disease processes, exposure of the student to the operating room, and an opportunity for improvement in surgical and procedural skills.

The School of Medicine Course Catalog lists the Surgery offerings for the Critical Care Selective and Sub-internship. Course numbers are in the 900 series and are listed under "Surgery".

Course Evaluation Summaries (prepared by the Office of Medical Education) are available in the Surgery Education Office. These show the ratings of these course offerings as viewed by previous students. The most recent reports are available in the Surgery Education Office.

SURGERY ELECTIVES

All of the Surgical Specialties offer rotations which satisfy the elective requirements to be completed in the 4th year.

VA rotations (KCVAMC or Leavenworth VAMC) generally allow greater opportunity for semi-independence for the Sub-internship student compared to rotations at the University Hospital. KUMC rotations offer experience in state of the art surgery in tertiary and quaternary care with regionally and nationally recognized experts in the various surgical specialty fields. All of the specialty elective rotations offer educational conferences which add a didactic/discussion component to the patient care emphasis of these rotations.

The School of Medicine Course Catalog lists the Surgery offerings for the electives. Course numbers are in the 900 series and are listed under "Surgery".

Areas for elective rotations include:

Highly sub-specialized areas within each of these sections/specialties are available for the student wishing to get a highly specialized exposure (such as Hand surgery or Breast surgery). Inquiry through the Surgery Education Office or through the appropriate Surgical Section office/Faculty Surgeon will help the student to arrange/choose highly specialized experiences. The Surgery Education Office can assist the student in refining these choices or finding the proper faculty for a sub-specialized experience.

Surgical Research is also offered as an elective course offering. Inquiry may be made through the Surgery Education Office or with individual faculty.
