Rural Rotation Policy |
Following are the guidelines for 3rd year students wishing to spend 4 weeks of the 8-week Surgery 900 rotation at a rural site.
One 4-week block of the 8-week Surgery 900 rotation may be spent at an approved rural site. The student must be approved for the rural rotation. The "Request To Take A Required Clerkship At A Location Other Than KUMC" form must be completed in its entirety for each request and submitted to the Clerkship Coordinator. The Coordinator will obtain approval from the Clerkship Director and then forward on to the Interdisciplinary and Outreach Coordinator for processing.
The required form can be accessed at the following web site: http://www.kumc.edu/som/medsos/RequiredThirdYearClerkshipatnon-KUMClocation.htm
Students chosen for rural rotation will attend their first 4 weeks at KUMC and the second 4 weeks at the rural location. The rural site represents the General Surgery assignment. If for any reason the student does not go to the rural site, a General Surgery rotation is chosen from open slots on the rotation schedule. |
· |
The student taking the rural rotation must be present at KUMC for the first day Orientation, the day of the Feedback Session, the day of the Oral Case Presentation, and the day of the NBME Surgery Subject Exam. |
· |
The rural rotation must occur during the second month of the block. If more than one student is doing the rural rotation at a given time, the students must agree on one site. (There cannot be students at multiple sites simultaneously) |
· |
The student(s) will participate in the didactics each Tuesday and Friday from 2 - 5 PM (times can vary) via the ITV System. |
· |
The student(s) will have their Surgery Skills Signature Card filled out as appropriate at the rural site and brought to the NBME Surgery Subject Exam. |
· |
The "Clinical Performance Rating" forms will be automatically sent electronically via E*value and will be completed by the faculty members. |
· |
Patient encounter data should be recorded and synched upon return to KUMC |

RULES FOR RURAL ROTATION DURING SURGERY 900 CLERKSHIP |
· |
Students must attend Orientation at KUMC at the start of any block in which he/she is doing a rotation. If the student is doing a “split” rotation (e.g. the student does one month during November but second month is not done until July - i.e. one or more months, separate the rotations) then the student must also attend the Orientation at KUMC given for the block in which the second rotation is taken. |
· |
Students who do a rural rotation must meet with the proper person from the rural track program at KUMC and document understanding of the limitations of the rural program (timing and circumstances in which the student would take the “Shelf" exam, limitations as a result of “site designations” for giving the “Shelf” , etc.) |
· |
Before a student is allowed to rotate at a rural site, the Surgery Clerkship Director (presently Dr. Haller) must approve the Surgery rotation there as an eligible site. This includes delivery of Curriculum Vitae of the surgical faculty at the rural site to the Surgery Education Office in a manner allowing sufficient time to review, interview (in person), and approve the site. Typically, the site receives a site visit by the Surgery Clerkship Director before approval is completed (to ensure that the tele-video system works, that the case mix is appropriate, that the philosophy of education is understood, etc). |
· |
Currently, 2 sites are available for Surgery 900 rural rotation as a result of meeting the criteria in the 3rd bullet above. They are McPherson and Manhattan, Kansas. As additional sites meet criteria, they will be added to the list of approved sites for rural Surgery 900 rotations. |
· |
The student will need a copy of their immunization records in order to do a rural rotation. |
