COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATION

In Australia the "comprehensive examination" is a written paper. This can be written questions but most often this exam is the thesis (or research study report) which should reflect the knowledge in the area of research, research hypothesis, question specification, scholarly review of literature, scientific methods, statistics, and clinically applicable implications/conclusions.

In Australia only 15% of population go to college whereas many go to the highly admired and rated trade schools. Recently the Australians have moved all nursing education into the university or all academic setting.

A degree at the PhD level is achieved not by courses taken but by research conducted and papers written. Instead of A, B, C, D like in the U.S. In Australia 1 of 5 selections is often used. And indeed, several candidates receive a 5, as experts in the content are selected reviewers.

  1. Award the degree
  2. Award the degree, subject to minor amendments (those identified by the examiners) to satisfaction of Supervisory Panel and Dean
  3. Require the candidate to undertake rewriting (as identified by the examiners) to satisfaction of Postgraduate Committee before degree is awarded
  4. Require candidate to revise and resubmit thesis for further examination within specified time (this may only be given once)
  5. NOT award the degree
