Evaluate Yourself on the PhD Terminal Objectives

  1. Conduct and communicate research that advances the body of scientific nursing knowledge.

Sample: I critiqued and read research from nursing and physiology related to cardiac outpatient improvements (quality)  with the elderly during exercise.


  1. Analyze, develop and evaluate concepts and theories which contribute to the science of nursing.

Sample: I critiqued a nursing research study on improving quality eating habits for elderly. In this nursing intervention study the authors neglected to consider culture  (commonly eaten foods in the diet).  Nursing interventions need to be modified based on cultural foods.



  1. Synthesize knowledge from nursing practice, research and related disciplines which contribute to the science of nursing.

Sample: Understanding human subjects permission procedures for conducting research made me realize how scientific merit or high quality research is a sensitive legal and ethical responsibility.  There is no use in recruiting participation of subjects if the research design is not adequate nor the sample size not enough power to address the hypothesis.



  1. Evaluate the impact of the expanded knowledge base in nursing and external forces on the provision of health care to society and on the development of health care policy.

Sample: I have become aware of the importance of nursing research and its implications for managed care for quality in other systems of care. I have of nursing studies at work to encourage research based practice (students should specify exactly what examples). I have joined the research committee at my place of practice. I also became aware of the special needs of elderly in participating in research, such as ....


  1. Examine the ways in which nursing knowledge and practice are influenced by historical developments, philosophical thoughts and cultural diversity.

Sample: Using professional standards, JCAHO criteria, and research findings -- the physicians, the nurses, social workers, and I have designed ways to improve our nutritional education of our elderly patients prior to discharge.
