Carol E. Smith, RN, PhD, a professor at the University of Kansas School of Nursing, has conducted federally funded research with technologically dependent adults since being awarded a grant in 1985 from the NIH Digestive Diseases Institute.

With two other National Institutes of Health grants she has published data-based articles on caregivers of adults dependent on ventilators in Heart and Lung Journal, in Journal of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition on TPN patient and their family caregivers Quality of Life at home. Her current funding from the National Institute of Nursing Research supports an exploration of families as a system of health care for technologically dependent adults at home. She was an invited speaker at the National Academy of Sciences consensus conference on "Safety and human factor training needs for families managing medical equipment in the home," in Washington D.C., 1995.

Dr. Smith received a BSN from the University of Iowa, an MSN as an adult nurse practitioner from Wayne State University, and a PhD in 1982 from the University of Minnesota. However, Carol says her very best credentials are M.O.M and wife. She has been married to John Smith (yes, it's his true name) for 28 years and they have two fun children 14 and 12 years old.
