Abstract

By Robert Spaniol

The purposes of this study were (1) to determine the characteristics of benchmark families that were efficient in terms of inputs, outputs and throughputs in managing the home care of chronically ill family members; (2) to identify variables in benchmark families that a healthcare professional might impact or influence using a resource management intervention; and (3) to identify how families differed in their resource use (before and after) an intervention (improved resource use instruction) as compared to a control group. Further analysis will be used (4) to describe whether professional home care managers and staff can justify this intervention on a cost minimization basis. DEA an economic analysis was performed to examine family efficiency using family –related input variables and the output variable of total cost and social-emotional expenditures for HPN. Overall, the analysis revealed three families to be benchmark families at 100% efficiency with potential improvement for the inefficient families existing mainly in lack of home care assistance and experiencing excessive depression.
