J Johnson Module A

Program of Research: Series of Studies Resulting in Improved Outcomes
by Jean Johnson, RN, PhD

Jean Johnson, RN, PhD, is a well-known nurse scientist.  She graduated with her BSN from the University of Kansas.  There is a Jean Johnson scholarship award for masters thesis student nurses working towards their masters degree at KU's School of Nursing.   This award honors her years of research.  Dr. Johnson's research studies are among the most highly referred to in all nursing literature (Garfield, 1984).

You will read about Dr. Johnson's research as we go through the modules. Reading from her studies will help you to meet some of NURS 460 course objectives: 1.) to describe the steps in the research process, 3.) types of research methods, and the role of theory in each and 6.) to use critical thinking (as Dr. Johnson did) to analyze outcomes of research relevant to health care interventions including therapeutic nursing interventions.

When Dr. Johnson was a new nurse working with surgical patients, she was observant.  As Florence Nightengale taught us, being observant and being systematic in data collection is the basis for all research.  Read about Dr. Johnson's early observations.
