Course Description:

Selected individual, family, and community client systems are observed in practice for consistency with theoretical and research literature. Field study and participant observations provide the means for comparing findings from research and practice.

Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Conduct a field study and compare findings with group to validate a concept analysis.
  2. Conduct participant observations and compare findings with group to validate a cultural theory in chosen client systems.
Methodology: This course is divided into two activities in which students complete clinical applications of study done in the didactic course. In groups they develop a community health improvement plan based on Healthy People 2010 guidelines and revise assessment forms to reflect holism. They hold discussions and report conclusions on the Web Board in clinical reports. Clinical requirements are four (4) clock hours per week (60 hours total). WebBoard discussions serve to integrate and synthesize independent work through group consensus. Evaluation for both activities includes half credit for individual contributions and half credit for group summary papers.
