Purpose of Assignment:

Completion of this assignment is intended to provide you the opportunity to apply theory-based criteria to assessment of group process.  10 of your 64 practicum hours are devoted to this activity. In this assignment you will use a set of criteria to assess group process in relation to the following: type, purpose and function of the selected group, group structure (group environment, norms, roles), group process (interactions, cohesion), and group development.

Your activities in Unit III and readings in the text entitled Group process for the health professions by Sampson and Marthas and Corey & Corey Groups: Process & Practice will provide you with the knowledge to conduct the assignment.

Methodology:

  1. Select one lay, self-help/support group or other health-related group you wish to observe.  Do not select an educational group because it may not have much group process to observe. Try to avoid observing a group at your place of employment that you are a regular member of. If you have any question of the appropriateness of the group for this assignment please ask me!
  2. Garner permission from the appropriate person to attend one group meeting, explaining your purpose as a graduate nursing student.
  3. Review the "Group Client System" assignment criteria and do the readings in the text that will help you prepare for the assessment.
  4. Attend the meeting on the designated day. Your purpose is to observe group process - unless the group members ask for your input.
  5. Complete group experience summary from syllabus entitled, "Summary of Group Client System" and submit to me by 11-17-06.
