The purpose of this unit is to introduce you to the world of theory and the place of theory in development of a body of knowledge for nursing. What is theory and what is the purpose of theory in nursing practice, education, and research? Terminology relevant to theory and its understanding are presented. In addition, this unit will present you with an overview of nursing's journey on the road to establishment of a scientific discipline. Ethical considerations in theory development and application are also addressed.
