Unit III: Family and Group Concepts and Theories

Purpose

The purpose of Unit 3 is to introduce the student to major theoretical approaches to the study of families and groups. Nursing research which utilizes family and group theory and concepts in their frameworks and research questions/hypotheses will be reviewed. In addition, the student will learn about the multi-theory based Friedman Family Assessment Model and apply it to their client family in the clinical practicum portion of the course. Finally, the student will learn about and apply a multi-theory based assessment model of groups. The course objectives which guide the unit are:

4. Analyze and critique concepts and theories using designated criteria.

5. Apply selected theories to the analysis of individual, family, and group client systems and their environments.
