COMPLETED RESEARCH:
Smith CE (PI) 9/10/95-6/30/01 NIH NRO1 NR040494 Technological Home Care: Costs and Quality of Life The specific aims were to test effects of nursing interventions to reduce HPN patients infection, depression and increase their problem solving.
Smith CE (PI) 2001 North American Parenteral and Enteral Patient Registry Database NASA: Supercomputing: 100 hours The specific aims were to use the computing power to convert the North American Database of 12,000 patients (followed for 10 years) into non-mainframe architecture.
ONGOING RESEARCH:
Smith CE (PI) 04/01/00 – 03/31/06 NIH NRO1 NIH#04828 Rural Dwelling Older Adults: CPAP Adherence Support 2.5 million The primary aim of this randomized clinical trial is to test the effects of intervention on long-term adherence to CPAP ventilation in rural dwelling adults (>60 years) and their family caregiver. The long-term goal of this study is to validate a CPAP adherence support system that will ultimately improve patient and family quality of life and public safety.
Smith CE (PI) 01/02/01 – 12/30/05 University of Kansas, Biomedical Funds $25, 000 Psychomotor Vigilance Monitor/Actigraphy and Life Shirt Technologies The specific aims were to test psychomotor vigilance and Acti-graphy measures related to CPAP adherence.
Smith CE (PI) Jean Johnson Awards Competitive Funds $3,000 Practical Sleep Strategies to Increase Vigilance The purpose of this study is to provide instructions, Sleep Management Strategies: Short recuperative strategies (power naps) and nightly sleep hygiene strategies to improve vigilance in managing complex home care, to improve daytime sleepiness and reduce highway traffic accidents. Psychomotor Vigilance Monitor/Actigraphy and Life Shirt Technologies are used in measuring Truck Driver’s use of Power naps.
Smith CE (PI) 05/18/04 – 03/01/05 $32,000 Kansas Research Institute RI # G5581027 Feasibility Testing of Nurse Videophone/Peer Support/Virtual Nursing Care Interventions for Caregivers/HPN Patients
The purpose of this study is to complete and then test all videotape/checklist education intervention components and to determine the feasibility of dyads using the entire intervention. This pilot also supported the assessment of procedures, intervention administration through videophone/internet, research team and peer caregivers training, pilot tested the proposed clinical trial procedures and determined time/burden on subjects.
