Career Planning

Your career planning occurs throughout your graduate masters education. At the beginning of graduate education planning includes taking time to talk and ponder the multiple opportunities advanced practice offers. There may be one specific direction you are headed toward or you may be interested in several. It is important to develop the skills that  cross all graduate programs because these skills are deemed essential in all advanced practice positions.

Early in your graduate program it is helpful to list objectives related to skills you need to develop. Read the right hand column of this table for skills. On the left column there are various roles that are part of most advanced practice positions.

Throughout your graduate education you will need to access yourself against the skills you'll need to graduate. Skills Self Assessment can be done through peer review, advisory/instructor feedback. Prior to "send-off" or graduating you'll need to review the skills you've accomplished and determine how to illustrate these skills to potential employers.

Your goals can be stated as objectives. Objectives are statements that include specific behavior, skills or measurable terms that clearly describe your skills and abilities. Skills or capabilities you write in your objectives will include many of those in the columns of the Advanced Practice Role table.
