Laboratory Experiences
(20% of course grade)

The following is a list of lab experiences to develop or increase your advanced role skills.  Do not select skills you already have.  All skills are to be practiced during the semester.  Three (3) labs may be chosen from the following - 1 for each module.

This course includes 3 laboratory experiences that are self-selected by students.  The laboratory hours are designed to enable students to gain experience and skills in a variety of professional advanced practice areas. Below are specifications for the reports:

Lab Experience Description

Knowledge (History)

1.  Cite historical impact of an issue on the contemporary nursing situation.

Knowledge Use

2.  Project the evolution of an advanced role (e.g. from 2003 to 2008).

Collaboration                    

3.  Define collaboration. Interview colleagues in other disciplines about their
definition of interdisciplinary collaboration.  How do interview comments compare to literature accounts? Discuss collaborative practice contracts.

Analyze Issues

4.  From the news media, identify one story that has health relevance.  Cite source.  Describe this issue.  Explain the health relevance.  Discuss what an APN can do to address the issue.

5.  Select 2 activities from 5A-5D.

5A. Computer/Internet activities - Visit amnhealthcare or nurse-zine and write your reaction.

5B.  Search a topic on the web and print out the first page of web sites or Links. Discuss this experience.

5C.  Print out web-based crib sheet for the APA Publication manual and discuss this experience.

5D.  Computer software - The student selects one of the software programs (e.g. statistical, word processing, graphics), completes the learner tutorial, and produces a small document from the software.

 

Role  Conflict

6.  Write a one-page reflection on your current professional roles conflicts and potential strategies to deal with them.  Use role theory to anchor comments. (Hamric Ch.5)

Political Action

7.  From the Developing leadership in the political area section of chapter 10 (Hamric et al., 2000), apply at least three strategies to a burning political issue (health related).  Write a 1-page summary of your political strategy application.

Health Care Values

8.  Many people find that they are pulled in different directions because they hold conflicting values about health/health care systems.  Define evaluative thinking. Use evaluative thinking to identify conflicting values you hold in regard to the kind of health care system the USA ought to have.

9.  Describe a local health department program that is designed to serve a particular vulnerable population, such as battered women.  What is the purpose? What data were used to show a need for it?  Was the source of the data valid?  Are the goals and objectives clearly stated?  How does the health department plan to evaluate the outcomes of the program?

10.  Interview an officer of a health facility, such as a hospital, that accepts Medicaid reimbursement for patient care.  Ask the officer:  Does the facility participate in managed-care reimbursement plans?  What impact has managed care or other types of cost control had on access to care, length of hospital stay, quality of care, and cost of care of Medicaid patients in this facility?

11.  Describe the demographic characteristic of your community. How might an APN use this information?

Health Care Access/Advocacy

12.  Interview a member of an advocacy group for the elderly or another population. Ask that person to discuss access to health care for the elderly/designated group in your community.

Advocacy

13.  Define and carry out an advocacy action. Document your attempt to influence health care policy or health care delivery and discuss relevant correspondence.

14.  Apply an ethical decision-making model to a clinical situation. (Hamric Ch. 12)

Legal

15.  Review protocols in your health care agency for incident reports, telephone prescriptions, controlled substances, and permission for surgical procedures.  Write a one-page summary about how these will aid or not aid malpractice claims.

16.  Interview a nurse who has served as an expert witness.  Determine what made that person an expert and what kinds of questions were asked at the trial.  Write a one-page summary of your reaction to this.

Critical Thinking

17.  Define critical thinking. Using critical thinking, discuss an analysis of your thinking during one of your lab exercises. Also, identify your personal disposition as a critical thinker.

Cultural Diversity

18.  Reflect on and analyze a professional experience during this semester in which you recognized how your own culture/heritage/ethnic background has conditioned your point of view.  Write about this experience and your awareness and how it changed you.

19.  Explore web sites on cultural diversity and/or “Diversity Resource” section of Dykes Library.  What is the message being conveyed by each site? Evaluate the sites you visit for their objectivity/bias, validity, reliability, and datedness.

Case Management

20.  If you are to design a case management program for your area of practice, what will it be?  Define case management and comment on:  a model, acute or ambulatory setting, primary care or management of chronically ill, impact on cost/reimbursement, and quality.  Write a one-page blueprint of your program.

21. Define case management.  Interview 2 case managers from different types of settings either by phone or in person.  Describe the similarities and differences in their case management role.

Assertiveness

22.  Define and practice assertiveness behavior during the semester in your professional role.  Write a one-page reflection about this experience. Include your and others feelings and reactions in the situation as well as outcomes.  How will this experience assist or deter your next attempt to increase your assertiveness skill and insights gained from this experience?

Consultation

23.  Define consultation and types of consultation.  Develop a consultation contract with essential elements.
