Course Description:

Health Care Professionalism in nursing as influenced by social, cultural, political, and economic forces interacting with complex client systems is examined. Issues that develop in the changing health care environment that impact health and solutions to problems associated with these issues are explored in relation to ethical and legal parameters. Innovative methods and skills essential for nursing are developed in a laboratory setting.

Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Analyze issues and skills related to leadership, management and teaching roles for practice with complex client systems.
  2. Analyze the interplay of contemporary issues and professional values.
  3. Explain the historical development of health care systems and advanced roles in nursing.
  4. Apply knowledge and skills necessary for consultation and collaboration in intra- and interdisciplinary practice and research.
  5. Apply knowledge and innovative skills necessary for providing cost-effective and beneficial practice in a variety of health care settings.
Methodology:

Readings, internet and library searches, online assignments and discussions, interviews, laboratory experiences, and individual communication with instructor.

NRSG 755 Evaluation Criteria & Guidelines

There are four modules in this course, approximately one for each month. There are four evaluation criteria to be completed by the end of the course: (1) on-line assignments, (2)  a paper, (3) laboratory experiences, and (4) WebBoard discussions. Each is explained below.

ON-LINE ASSIGNMENTS (40%)

For each of the four modules, students will complete on-line assignments. When you click on "Course Modules," you will see "On-Line Assignments" listed. Click on each on-line assignment to find the content explained in detail.

LABORATORY EXPERIENCES (20%)

This course includes 3 laboratory experiences that are self-selected by students.  The laboratory hours are designed to enable students to gain experience and skills in a variety of professional advanced practice areas. Below are specifications for the reports:

ISSUE AND ROLE PAPER

  1. Introduction (5%)

    Purpose of paper, rationale for selecting the issue, and importance of the issue.

  2. Review of the Literature (5%)

    Review of literature, including a brief historical evolution of the issue. If possible, personal contact with people who are knowledgeable about the topic.

  3. Analysis of Issue (from a national perspective) (5%)

    Identification of legal, ethical, economic, and cultural dimensions of issue and solutions/approaches from a systems perspective. For each dimension, recommend strategies for problem resolution along with a rationale for each strategy.

  4. Application of the APN Role (5%)

    Describe your role in the context of the issue you have chosen and include core competencies (Chapter 3 in Hamric) required for the role (cite assigned texts and other references).

WEB BOARD DISCUSSIONS (20%)    

The purpose of the WebBoard discussions is to provide a common place where all may view others' work and dialogue among students in the course. The assigned readings in the required textbooks and additional readings should be read prior to participating in discussions in order to incorporate content from the readings into your discussions. The related module assignment also should be completed before participating in a WebBoard discussion to maximize your ability to respond in the discussion.
