Discussion for Webboard
During the months of September, October and November, I will post a question/issue on the webboard with specific instructions for your response.
The class will be divided into two groups. If your last name starts with the letters A-G, you are assigned to Group 1. If your last name begins with the letters H-Z, you are assigned to Group 2. You will remain in these groups throughout the course. Each group has a specified two-week period to respond.
SEPTEMBER DISCUSSION
Nursing is the "invisible majority" in health care as discussed in Sullivan, chapter 6.
Group 1: Create a one-sentence statement about your current or future role in nursing. Address your statement to the public. Do NOT use jargon, but be informative, succinct and persuasive.
Group 2: Respond to one of Group 1's statements as if you had no background in health care. What did you think of the statement? Was it clear to you? Did you understand what this nurse does? What is your impression of the nurse's role? And of nurses?
Group 1 has from September 1-15 to respond.
Group 2 has from September 16-30 to respond.
OCTOBER DISCUSSION
Everyone: Read the one-page viewpoint column, "Generational Tension among Nurses" by Santos and Cox in AJN, vol 102, no 1, January, 2002. Refer to Hamric, chapter 12, Sullivan, chapter 25, and the ANA Code of Ethics.
Group 2: Take the role of Margret.
Group 1: Take the role of Carol.
What assumptions and rationale are you using in this scenario? What core competency are you demonstrating? What ethical standards apply?
Group 2 has from October 1-15 to respond.
Group 1 has from October 15-31 to respond.
NOVEMBER DISCUSSION
Group 2: Identify your strongest leadership skill. Describe how you may use it in a specific situation to advance positive change.
Group 1: Comment on any one of group 1's responses. What suggestions do you have to add to further advance positive change?
Group 2 has from November 1-15 to respond.
Group 1 has from November 15-30 to respond.
