FAILURE TO HAVE A MENSTRUAL PERIOD

PROBLEMS: For some reason that we do not fully understand, you have stopped ovulating or putting out an egg each month and have stopped having menstrual periods. This is a very common problem. It is not immediately dangerous for you. However, it is not good for you to let this go on for a long period of time because the inside lining of your uterus is having only estrogen stimulation and over a long period of time, this could become cancerous.

CAUSE: Althouth the cause is usually unknown, amenorrhea is often associated with low thyroid, excessive exercise such as an athlete or dancer, or excessive weight loss.

PREVENTION: There is no specific prevention. However, if you noticed a decrease frequency of menstrual periods or absence of menstrual periods when you increased your exercise, you should decrease the intensity. If you lose too much weight you could stop having periods. Try to gain some weight.

TREATMENT PLAN: Decrease exercise,increase weight and replace progesterone

MEDICATIONS:

Your health care providor will prescribe progesterone that your overies are not making at the present time.

Your progesterone may be perscribed in the form of birth control pills.

ACTIVITY: Decrease intensity of exercise. Take at least two days off each week and decrease the amount of time during each exercise session.

DIET: Increase calories and try to put on 5 pounds if you have lost a lot of weight.
