Male Condom

We are all aware of the condom.   It is widely used and effective, when used correctly and every act of intercourse, at decreasing the incidence of pregnancy and STI's.  Spermicidal condoms with nonoxynol-9 are recommended.

Caution:  Use only water soluble lubricants.  Oil based lubricants deteriorate the condom.

Instructions for Patients, Hatcher, et al. (1998) p. 347-349.  Use this as a basis for teaching.  See Handouts for Hatchers handout for condoms.

Female Condom

Effective, but relative expensive, $3-4.00 each.  One per act of intercourse.  Crinkling sound bothers some people.   Using water soluble lubricant helps.  See handout in Handout section.

Vaginal Spermicidal

See Hatcher, et al. (1998) page 366-368 for patient instructions.

See Handout section for Patient Education handouts.

Diaphragm

Fitting a diaphragm is relatively easy.  Instructions in Hatcher et al. (1998) are on p. 39--392 and in Johnson, et al (1996)  p. 682-3.

There is a patient education handout in the Handout section.

General guides: use spermicidal around the rim. Leave in place 6-8 hours. Use applicator of spermicidal if intercourse again. Don’t leave in for more that 18 hours. Check for holes. Use EVERY time . Care: wash in mild soap, dry, may use cornstarch, not talc.

Cervical cap

Fitting a cervical cap Johnson, et al. (1996) p. 685 and Hatcher, et al on p. 392.

Use:  Must leave in for 6 hours.  May leave in for 18 hours.  See patient education handout.
