Hi! Welcome to the KU SON Web page devoted to Womens Health. My name is Barbara Latinis
Bridges and I have been practicing and teaching women’s health nursing for many
years.
I worked as a staff nurse in Labor and Delivery 40 years! I just resigned this summer (2003).
I am also an OB-GYN Nurse Practitioner (certified by NCC) as well as a Family Nurse Practitioner (certified by ANCC). I practice Richard Whitlow MD an Internal Medicine Physician. I spend two days a week and every 4th Saturday seeing patients. Our office is at St. John Medical Plaza in Leavenworth, KS. I see about 40% womens health patients and the other 60% are patients of various ages and sexes with all the other reasons for seeking health care.
My practice as a nurse practitioner is recognized for that very hard to define "nursing" component. Many
of the people with whom I work recognize that nurses and nurse practitioners take the time to teach the patient about health and various illnesses!
Another Nurse Practitioner joined our practice last spring. His name is Michael Vertahler.
Another part of my job involves teaching responsibilities in the KU School of Nursing where I teach in the Masters in Nursing program. I am an Associate Professor and have a Bachelors, Masters and Post Masters Degree in Nursing and a Doctoral Degree in Education. The Post Masters degree is from the University of Missouri-Columbia (Go Tigers) and the other degrees are from the University of Kansas (Go Hawks).
I also have a busy personal life. My husband, Kenneth, is a dentist and we spend as much time as possible skiing, riding our bicycles, jogging, traveling and being with friends and family and pets. Together we have five children and eleven grandchildren--and two little Shih Tzu dogs!
