We have a duty to know and understand these methods. They are based upon understanding anatomy and physiology, even abstinence since abstinence usually indicates no penal/vaginal or penal/anal intercourse. Hatcher et al. (1198) have excellent chapters. Enjoy!
Also included in this group is withdrawal. I am amazed at how many people use this method. We should never deride anyone for using any method. We may suggest other methods. The patient will choose.
Be sure and read the Instructions for using abstinence in Hatcher et al.(1998) pate 301. See the handout in the Handout section. It may be copied and used. There is also and "Outercourse" handout.
Withdrawal (Coitus Interruptus)
Instructions for users is on page of 306 of Hatcher, et al. (1998). There is a patient handout in the Handout section.
Fertility Awareness
These methods use basic reproductive physiology as a basis. This is why it important for use to really understand. These methods include: Calendar Method (rhythm), Basal Body Temperature ; Cervical Secretions, Symptothermal Method (Billings)
Lactation Amenorrhea Method
This method has as its basis 1) Full breastfeeding (no water, etc) 2) Mother nurses around the clock q 3-4 hours 3) no menstrual period 4) first 6 months. This is 98% effective. Hatcher et al (1998) p 592.
