Use these mini-projects to help you synthesize clinical knowledge on a variety of topics or one selected topical area. Project topics include the following:

Mini-Project #1
Rapid changes in in clinical information will necessitate self-directed, life-long learning. Complete the following as beginning self-assessment.
A. Self-Assessment- What are your objectives for this course? What previous work prepares you for these course challenges? Review course objectives and compare how your personal objectives compare to those of the course. What lead to your interest in this program? What are your goals as you complete this program?
Additionally share one example (or a brief overview) of how your current work experiences help prepare you for an advanced practice role. Your experience as expert clinician, teacher, change agent, or researcher are some beginning approaches to consider. Email this self-assessment to your instructor. wbonnel@kumc.edu
B. What has surprised you about clinical practice in your new adult-gero practicum site? What have you learned from your preceptor during your first days with that person? Did it have to do with patient care? Professional practice issues? Share a few sentences about this experience at the webBoard by the assigned date

Mini-Project #2 Critical thinking and Evidenced Base Practice in Diagnostics
Become familiar with common resources you will want to guide you in practice. Beginning activities include:
A. What will be the important web resources to consider for your practice? What are guidelines for knowing a good from a not so good web site? What web resources will you need to be familiar with to provide EBP? You can begin your review of potential resources at Week ly URLS. Complete this review for your own benefit.

A quick guideline for evaluating websites is the PLEASED model:
From: Leslie Nicoll, RN, PhD, 10th Annual American Nursing Informatics Association Conference Keynote, May 9, 2003.
B. What’s in your lab coat pocket? How will you organize information as you begin seeing patients? Will you use a PDA? A collection of "mini-references"? Be specific as to the types of resources you will include (ie if using a PDA, what resources will you have on it? What are the pros and cons of beginning your clinical advance practice using a PDA?) Share at the webBoard on the assigned date either your specific plans for pocket resources or the ideas you have gained from talking to other NPs .

Mini-Project #3 Critical thinking and EBP in Health Promotion.
This assignment is to help you synthesize clinical knowledge and formulate treatment plans related to health promotion needs.
Three of the top 5 public health concerns /issues as described by the Department of Health & Human Services are: diabetes, tobaccoism and obesity. What will be your role in acute or primary care to help decrease these public health problems? Select one of the three topic areas (or a preferred area you have discussed with faculty) and share how your practice site promotes health with this population (Who shares? What type of information? When, where is it shared? Individual patient/group approaches? Outcomes evaluated?) What are the strengths of this practice facilities approach? What recommendations would you have for change (ie other national guidelines /resources that should be considered?). Share your summary and recommendations /resources at the WebBoard by the assigned date.

Mini-Project # 4. Critical thinking and EBP in Patient Education &Health Literacy
What do we mean by the concept of health literacy? After completing related readings, share your approach to a patient care situation from a health literacy perspective. (For example, assess a patient for health literacy on a relevant clinical topic). Additionally share your assessment of patient education approaches at the practicum site you are working at. Address people, place and process issues in this patient education. If any weaknesses are noted in the patient education/health literacy process/procedures what recommendations would you make? Share your summary and recommendations /resources at the WebBoard by the assigned date.

Mini-Project # 5 Sharing your patient's story
Share a patient’s real story. Identify a patient with chronic health problems and write the story of this patient that might go on a "parallel chart." (a chart not specific to the current health care system. Learn from the patient about how long they have had this chronic disease, about what it has been like to have the disease. Are there particular symptoms or care challenges that are bothersome to them? Have they received the patient education and support they needed to cope with this disease? Are there any good points that go with having this disease? Additional prompts might be, is cost an issue? Are time factors for providing self-care an issue? Other things?

Mini-Project 6. Post Course Self-Assessment- Review your initial self-assessment. What progress have you made in meeting personal and course objectives? How would you rate yourself on this progress. Fair? Good? Excellent? How have your plans for post-program completion progressed. Same plans, same plans with some additional considerations, totally different considerations?
Additionally share a one page examplar of your best patient care experience this Fall. This exemplar can come from any of the following roles: clinician, educator, change agent, or researcher. Email this self-assessment to your instructor. wbonnel@kumc.edu
