Have you seen the movie Driving Miss Daisy? Other shows (or news articles) that may suggest that there are some issues related to driving and older adults?
As a primary care provider, what are your concerns (and what should you do) when an adult daughter comes in and says "Moms not doing so great with the car?" Use the following questions to review and consider your approaches to such a case.
1. What skills are needed to drive a car?
2. What physical aging changes might complicate driving a car?
3. Anything besides physical aging changes that might complicate driving ability for an older adult?
4. How do you know if an older adult should stop driving?
5. Do you have any role as an APN in making that decision?
6. What are potential complications the older adult may face related to loss of the car?
7. Does the APN have a role to work with the family in assessing for potential complications related to loss of the car? Recommending resources available?
