Course Description:

Knowledge and skills necessary to provide holistic care for the culturally diverse adult in multiple care settings are emphasized in this one of two non-sequential theory courses for Adult/Gerontological advanced practice students. Clinical manifestations of and patient response to selected problems of sensory, psychologic, neurologic, musculoskeletal, and dermatologic systems and infections are examined. Physical and multidimensional functional assessments are emphasized as a basis for establishing differential diagnoses and planning effective therapeutic interventions. Coordination of services and collaboration with an interdisciplinary team for comprehensive health care are integrated throughout the course.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

    1. Synthesize clinical knowledge from the natural/behavioral sciences and nursing science as a foundation for managing physical and emotional illness to promote optimal functional levels.
    2. Demonstrate critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning skills as a foundation for independent and collaborative clinical decision-making.
    3. Formulate treatment plans which integrate pharmacological and therapeutic nursing interventions into the treatment of specific health care problems of culturally diverse adults.
    4. Analyze research findings pertinent to health care management and treatment, care outcomes, quality of care, and economic criteria.
    5. Base holistic care planning on legal principles and standards of professional nursing practice.

Course Methodology:

Lectures, discussions, group activities, internet activities and student presentations are used to develop knowledge base of theories, concepts and research related to health care of adults and their families. Seminars on content relevant to the advanced practice role (either NP or CNS) are held concurrently in NRSG 863 and NRSG 864.

PROFITS Statement
Professional Integrity System (PROFITS)

In 1995, the faculty of the School of Nursing voted to adopt the Professional Integrity System (PROFITS). All students sign the PROFITS Pledge:

"I pledge that I will not give, receive, nor tolerate unauthorized aid, nor will I abuse academic resources while I am a member of this academic community."

PROFITS upholds behaviors reflective of individual responsibility, mutual trust, professional values, and standards. PROFITS values an academic environment free of academic misconduct or abuse of academic resources. When in doubt, the student must clarify with the instructor the appropriateness of behaviors that may violate PROFITS.

The following are some examples of unacceptable behaviors in NRSG862:

[Students are encouraged to seek editorial feedback regarding writing style, APA style, and clarity of papers from other students, professional colleagues, or the staff of the Student Services Department, Student Center.]

The values supported in PROFITS reflect the values of professional nursing. Remember, PROFITS begins with you.

Please refer to your KUMC Student Planner and Handbook for more information about PROFITS.
