Course Description:  Nurs 421

Theoretical concepts from Nurs 420 are applied in a clinical laboratory setting. Critical thinking and the nursing process are used to provide therapeutic nursing interventions with client systems experiencing complex acute alterations in physiological and psychological functioning. Emphasis is on mastery of advanced assessment techniques and interdisciplinary communication. Opportunities are provided for application of the concepts for using technically advanced therapeutics which support physiological functioning and maintain hemodynamic stability.

Clinical Hours:

90 hours must be successfully completed over the course of the semester with the approval and awareness of the instructor. (1.5 Credits)

Level III, Fall
Co-requisite: Current enrollment in N420


Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the learner will:

  1. Apply theories and concepts to the nursing care of clients with complex acute needs.
  2. Apply the nursing process using professional standards in the care of clients with complex acute needs.
  3. Communicate appropriately with client system in crisis and stressful situations.
  4. Use advanced technology in a safe and effective manner.
  5. Use knowledge of legal, ethical, cultural and economic issues in providing outcomes based care.
  6. Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to provide care to clients with complex acute needs.
  7. Relate current research findings to the care of clients with complex acute needs.
Methodology:

The student will work with an expert nurse as a preceptor, with joint goal-setting, identification of learning needs, implementation of nursing care, and evaluation of the teaching-learning process. The instructor will be available at all times while students are engaged in clinical learning.
