COURSE: NURS 430 POPULATION BASED HEALTH CARE

                    OCTH 776 POPULATION BASED CLINICAL REASONING

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Concepts and theories related to providing health care to complex systems and aggregates in the community, state, nation and world are explored. Emphasis is placed on the promotion, maintenance and restoration of health and wellness and the prevention of disease. Internal and external environmental components which include historical, political, social, cultural and economic factors are presented. The role of the health care provider in identifying, prioritizing and meeting the health and life participation needs of aggregates is discussed.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Integrate knowledge from nursing/occupational therapy, and related arts and sciences as a basis regarding health care decisions affecting aggregate populations.
  2. Examine the internal and external environmental factors that influence the health of a population.
  3. Discuss the epidemiological process in regard to primary, secondary and tertiary health care for culturally diverse aggregates.
  4. Analyze ethical, legal, and economic issues that affect health care interventions.
  5. Explore the emerging role of health professionals and the interdisciplinary team approach in improving the health status of the community, state, nation and the world.

The Newsroom (20%)

The purpose of this assignment is to familiarize yourself and your classmates with current topics relating to public health nursing/
occupational therapy and/or vulnerable populations.

There are TWO parts to this assignment: Reporter and Responder.

1. Reporter: As the reporter you are required to submit a report to The Newsroom via Discussion Board postings. Click here for your reporter due date and discussion board newsroom.  These reports should be based on current information that you have read from a newspaper, magazine, or research journals. Current reports from reputable internet cites also are acceptable (such as the Centers for Disease Control, American Heart Association, etc.)           

On the date when you are the reporter, you do not need to respond to anyone else's report. Your newsroom report is worth 10% of your newsroom grade.

2. Responder: On the due dates when you are not a reporter, you will be a responder.  When you are a responder, you are required to write a thoughtful response to at least three (3) of your classmates' reports. Include your cognitive & affective reactions to the reported issue. Do you agree or disagree with your classmate's conclusions? Why? What additional information would you like to have had? Your responses are due within 7 days of the Reporter due date.  Keep in mind - you will provide THREE responses for EACH of the three newsroom dates when you are NOT the reporter.  Over the course of the semester, you will have contributed nine responses to the newsroom discussion board.  Your newsroom responses for the semester are worth 10% of your grade.

Newsroom Responses will be evaluated by the following scale:

 Responses should be two fold: Cognitive and Affective (each element worth 2 points in each response)

4 = Evidence of cognitive and affective reflection in the response

2= Evidence of only cognitive or affective reflection addressed in the response

0 = No posting within the 7day submission window;  Response lacking cognitive or affective reflection

Group Assignments (40%)

The purposes of the group assignments are to analyze and synthesize information important to the unit and course and to facilitate interaction with and learning from your classmates. You will work in assigned groups and turn in responses to assigned exercises for 4 of the 6 units. You will complete these assignments using the area for your group in the discussion board. Planning ahead is critical, thus, it is important that you:

Review the unit group assignments
Communicate
with your group, classmates, and facilitator,
Negotiate your responsibilities with your group,

Submit your substantive individually completed assignment by deadline, and
Check the discussion board often, ideally every day.

There are two parts to this assignment: Group Facilitators and Group Contributors.

1. Group Facilitators: For each unit exercise, there will be group members assigned as the group facilitator.  Click here for your facilitator assignment. The facilitator's responsibility is to summarize the groups' work, to negotiate time schedules for completion of work, and to post the group summary on the discussion board by the due date.  The facilitator is not required to post an individual response, although it is encouraged in order to assure thoughtful and participatory interaction with the group.

2. Group Contributors: The contributor's responsibility is to individually complete the unit assignments as outlined in units 2, 3, 5, & 6.  You will use the discussion board area for your group to share your thoughts and post your individual assignment. You are encouraged to engage in assignment related dialogue throughout the group units. As a group contributor, you are required to post your individual unit assignment.  Failure to enter your individual unit contribution within three days of the group summary due date will result in point deductions.

How will we grade and/or reply to group assignments? All members of a group will receive a group grade based on the summary provided by the group facilitator(s). Grade adjustments will be made if individual students fail to meet the student performance expectations listed below. We will provide feedback on the group summary to group members. 

Individual Assignment (20%)

The purpose of this assignment is to offer each student an opportunity to explore a topic of their own choosing. Refer to unit 4 for specific guidelines. Each of you will receive feedback for this assignment on an individual basis.

Final Exam (20%): On December 1st, the final examination for your specific course number (NURS430 or OCTH 776) will be available to you on the ANGEL course site.  You will submit your completed examination via "Final Drop Box" to your discipline specific course instructor by noon on December 11, 2006. Although there are many group projects in this course, the final exam represents your independent knowledge and ability and is to be completed on your own.

    A = 90%- 100%

    B = 80% - 89.9%

    C = 70% - 79.9%
