WELCOME
Welcome to NURS 430 and OCTH 776.
This web-based
course will be taught jointly with both nursing and occupational therapy
students. Students from both programs
will be grouped together to allow for interdisciplinary exchange of ideas,
questions, and perspectives and support collaborative learning.
We
look forward to a successful cyberspace experience and are very excited about
the opportunities that will open up for us in the future. Certainly, we acknowledge that this creates interest in many of you and
varying degrees of anxiety in all of you. We hope the following information
will help you get started. If you do
experience any anxiety or concerns, please contact
Jackie or
Wendy so we can help you.
The ANGEL eLearning technology is new to
all of this year: faculty and students alike. The ANGEL site can
be accessed at
https://elearning.kumc.edu/Angel or through your myKUMC portal at
https://my.kumc.edu/. You will want to
familiarize yourself about eLearning, ANGEL, eLearning technology, student
success tips, and student support services and resources. Refer to this
link: Teaching and Learning Technologies:
eLearning at the University of Kansas Medical Center to understand the
expectations of you and the resources available to you when participating in
online courses at KUMC.
Web
learning is student directed. We are here to
facilitate your learning. Because we are not in a traditional
classroom where a teacher lectures, you will have to be very self-directed
in your learning. All of us have differing abilities in
self-direction and this will play a part in how well you do in this course
and how well you like it. Online learning has many advantages. For
example, you don't have to leave work to attend class and you can set your
own schedule within the framework provided. However, web learning also
can be frustrating for some students. One needs to develop study strategies
for web-based learning that complement your learning style.
You can expect to spend between 6 to 10
hours per week on this course, depending on your learning strategies and
computer skills. That means for each unit, you should allow 16 hours to
complete the assignment. Remember you would have spent approximately 6 to 8
hours per week if we met in a traditional classroom - that is between class
time, reading, and studying.
The course is divided into 6 units. Except for Unit 1 (which is not graded), you will have 2 to 3 weeks to complete the assignments associated with each unit. The course is divided into three primary segments as follows:
Individual Assignments:
Two of the 6 units are individual assignments. You will complete Unit 1 and Unit 4 on your own.
Group assignments:
Unit Objectives and Reading Assignments are provided to guide your studying.
Unit Assignment Instructions will be specific to each group assignment.
Unit Responsibilities are divided among facilitators and individual contributors for each group unit/assignment. Refer to the syllabus and the unit assignment instructions for a description of facilitator and contributor roles.
Unit discussion will occur in the discussion board section for your group.
Newsroom:
Separate "discussion board" designated for newsroom
reports and responses. Each discussion board area had a "news title"
housing specific newsroom postings. "Days of Our Lives"
is for student introductions posted by everyone during the first week of class.
Starting with "Nightline Newsroom", we have made a schedule of due dates for newsroom
reporter assignments. Responders will post their responses
within 7 days of the reporters' due date. Refer to the newsroom reporters' page to find your reporter due date.
To initiate a thread of discussion on the discussion board, you simply need to click on "New Post" to begin a "thread" of discussion about a specific topic or question.
When responding to a topic, responders will post or type in their responses by clicking on "Reply" at the bottom of the specific topic thread. When you are finished with your reply, click the "Post" button. Please, do NOT click on "new post" unless you are bringing forward a new topic. If you want to review your message before posting, simply click on "Preview" and then "Close". Changes can be made in the original message box prior to your final "Post".
The discussion board is not a chat room, not everyone is on
the discussion board at the same time; therefore, this is called an asynchronous
format. You will want to check into the discussion boards often to stay
current and involved with the "class" exchanges and the ongoing work of your
group.
Helpful Web Sites
for N430/OCTH776
We have begun a resource page with helpful web sites. If you find a helpful website to share with your classmates, let us know and we will add it to this list throughout the semester.
Accessing the KUMC Groupwise E-mail System
You are asked to use the KUMC net-based e-mail system and your KUMC e-mail account for required group/course activities that stipulate use of the e-mail mode of communication (as opposed to threaded discussion). Click on the link above and follow the directions for logging in using GroupWise 6. Your user name is your first initial and last name (e.g. cstarlin). Your password is either your student ID number or what you changed it to during Orientation.
