Objectives for Unit 4

1. 1. Describe at least 3 factors in each of the six dimensions of health that are relevant to a specific disease process or a woman's health issue that you selected for this unit. 
2. 2. Identify interventions at the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels of prevention that will influence the problem that you selected for this unit.
3. 3. Describe political, social, economic, and environmental factors that influence the problem that you selected for this unit.

Individual Assignment (due by noon October 18)

This unit is an individual assignment requiring no coordination with your group. To assure that formatting is not lost, you are to submit your assignment as a Word document attachment via your specific faculty grader drop box. 

Select one of the following topics based on a personal area of interest area. 

Topic #1 - Communicable Disease

A communicable disease is a disease that can be transmitted from person to person and does not require a vector for transmission. Select a communicable disease that you are interested in learning more about. This disease should represent a national or global health issue.

Topic #2  - Women's Health Problem

Select a woman's health problem that you are interested in learning more about.  Potential examples include but are not limited to HIV in women, teen pregnancy, substance abuse, mothers' and low-birth weight infants, women and depression, and domestic violence.

Assignment Requirements:

For either topic, select a minimum of three current professional sources (credible internet, professional journal, etc.) and research this communicable disease or women's health problem. We strongly recommend that you visit the Center for Disease Control as one or your sources.  NOTE: Popular press and media are NOT considered professional sources.

Use the dimensions model of community health OR the ecology of human performance model as your guiding framework. Write no more than three double spaced (APA 5th ed. format) pages discussing:

• the prevalence of this problem
• the risk factors associated with the development of this disease or  problem
• what populations or sub-groups are at increased risk and why
• what social, political, and economic factors influence this problem
• what role a nurse/OT in public health has in the primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention interventions with this problem.
• cite sources/references using APA 5th edition format
