How do I use my browser?

Browsing the web can be a more satisfying experience if you know more about the features of your web browser. The most common browsers used today are Internet Explorer and Netscape.

The browser display has a row of Menus across the top. There will also be a row of Toolbar buttons just below these Menus. All of the Toolbar buttons are also found as options within Menus:

You will also see a Uniform Resource Locators (URL) displayed in the area entitled "Address" (in Internet Explorer) or "Netsite" (in Netscape). The Uniform Resource Locator is simply an address where individual web pages reside.

Frequently Used Browser Functions

There are several common browser functions that are very useful for web navigation.

Print - Found as both as a Toolbar button, and as a File Menu option, the Print feature allows you to print a Netscape display to any printer connected to your computer. Notice than there is also a Print Preview option under the File menu, so you can see what you are getting before you print.

Find in pages... - An Edit Menu option, Find in pages... lets you search for some text within the web page that is currently displayed in your browser's window.

Go - The Go Menu contains several options that are also found as Toolbar buttons: Back, Forward, Home, Stop.

Back - takes you backwards one link at a time, back through the last few web pages you have looked at.

Forward - lets you navigate forwards through the links that you had already visited, then backed out of.

Home - takes you back to the Home Page that has been designated in the copy of Netscape you are currently using.

Stop - stops the loading of a resource; if you are waiting for a long time for a web page to appear, for instance, you can select Stop and Netscape will stop loading it.

Reload - Found both as a Toolbar button and as an option in the View Menu, this feature lets you request a fresh copy of a web page. Ordinarily, once you have visited a web page, a copy of that page is kept in your computer's memory ("cached") until you hit Reload.

Will I need any other software to complete the course?

Yes, you will need Adobe Acrobat, a plugin that works with Netscape.  If you do not have this you can down load it by clicking below.

Adobe Acrobat

You may also download this from the KU Software Download site if you use KUMC On-line for your internet provider. The Student Computing CD, available from the ITC/ERC, also contains all the software needed for distance education courses.

How do I navigate the course?

The courses are divided into sections; 'Syllabus', 'Course Modules', 'Course Calendar', . These sections are accessible through the links on the bottom of each page. 'Syllabus' and this help page contain valuable information that will help you successfully complete the course. They should be read before you begin any coursework. All coursework is accessed through either the 'Course Calendar' or 'Course Modules' pages.

Portions of the courses contain hyperlinks (also called links) to information within the course and outside to the World Wide Web. Hyperlinks are indicated by blue underlined text. You may visit a link as often as you like.

How do I use the On-line Discussion Group?

The case studies are presented in a threaded discussion format using WebBoard. Detailed information on how to log on to and use the threaded discussion can be found by clicking on the following:

Logging in to WebBoard      Using WebBoard

It is highly recommended that you read both of these before participating in the threaded discussion.  It would also be helpful to print both of these to keep on hand as a quick reference.

As with the module questions, it is best to type your answers in a word processing program and then copy and paste the responses into the threaded discussion.

Do you want to make sure the instructor receivedyour e-mail? See how you can use Groupwise to look at e-mail properties.

Note: For this feature to be available both users must be using the Groupwise system within KUMC (sending files from one kumc.edu e-mail address to another kumc.edu e-mail address).

Properties lets you check the status of any item you've sent. For example, you can see when an item was delivered and when the recipient opened or deleted the item. If a recipient accepted or declined an appointment and included a comment, you'll see the comment in the Properties window. You'll also see if a recipient marked a task Completed.

Properties also shows information about items you receive. You can see who else received the item (except for blind copy recipients), the size and creation date of attached files, and more.

    1. Click or open the item for which you want to check the status
    2. Click File Properties
