Varied Curriculum Definitions:
Compare some of these definitions to those noted in Billings & Halstead text:
The planned engagement of learners
The interchange between students, faculty, and subject matter
The subject matter taught to students
The experiences that students have under the guidance of the school
A sequence of experiences set up by the school to discipline students
in
group ways of thinking and acting … cultural "training"
A course of study … a systematic arrangement of courses
An arrangement of materials of instruction, extending over a considerable period of time, and planned for a specific group of students
A means to facilitate the growth of students (above definitions from T. Valiga and C. Magel, 2001)
Curriculum as a structure versus a process. What is taught in schools or intended to be taught . A set of intentions -such as a blueprint for a house. (G. Posner and A. Rudnitsky, 982)
"Formal and informal content and process by which learners gain knowledge and understanding, develop skills, and alter attitudes, appreciations, and values under the auspices of that school. (R .Doll -1996).
Common components of a definition of curriculum include: preselected goals/outcomes to be achieved; selected content with specific sequencing in a program of study; process and experiences to facilitate learning, resources used; the extent of responsibility assumed by the teacher and learner for learning; how and where curriculum takes place (Dillard and Laidig Chapter in Billings and Halstead text, 1998)
Other perspectives of curriculum: organized knowledge presented in a
set of subjects/courses; modes of thought; cognitive/affective content
and process; a set of instructional ends or outcome/performance objectives;
everything that is planned by faculty or a planned learning environment;
activities that go on within the school, including extracurricular activities,
guidance, and interpersonal relationships; that which individual learners
experience as a result of schooling. (Dillard and Laidig, 1998).
