FACULTY ASSUMPTIONS

It is the expectation that students come with the skills and knowledge base from their baccalaureate program, practice, and any graduate courses taken up to this time. When did you last have an anatomy or assessment class? If more than 5 years, you will need to do a review. Students will need to review and reestablish that knowledge base.

Basic health assessment skills - Please review the mastery demonstration check-off lists from the undergraduate course (NURS 352:Assessment for Practicing Nurses).  Are you familiar with 90% of these items?  This is an example of skills that faculty expect of students entering this course.

See checkoffs used in NURS 352:

If these skills are unfamiliar, we suggest reviewing a basic assessment textbook like Jarvis, Bates, or Mosby or to review health assessment tapes in the ERC.

Anatomy knowledge - Faculty do not have class time for anatomy review (in advanced patho, pharm, & all clinical theory courses), therefore we have a self assessment quiz so you can design your self-study as needed.

If you didn’t get 80-90%, click on an on-line version of Gray’s Anatomy for answers and to review.

Suggestions for texts:

  • A.D.A.M. Student Atlas of Anatomy by Olson
  • Moore & Dalley, Clinically Oriented Anatomy
  • Netter, Atlas of Human Anatomy, Student Edition
  • Other text of your choosing.

Pathophysiology knowledge - If it has been a long time since you have taken pathophysiology or you would like to review some pathophysiologic principles, we have a undergraduate internet course you can examine. Just click here:
