BOOKS/EQUIPMENTBooks – KU Bookstore will provide a discount on all required textbooks. Also be aware that you can purchase other books at the bookstore at a discount, if you bring a printout of the lowest price found on the internet. Go to: http://www.kumedbooks.com/. Click on "Textbooks" then "Visit CampusI for Best Price Guarantee Matches." Personal Reference Library – As mentioned in the beginning, you are making a commitment to an advanced nursing practice role. Building your personal reference library will be an important component. It is just too difficult to remember the clinical management of all of unusual clinical conditions that will present to your practice. Faculty will have suggestions for your library in every course and books are expensive. Make wise and judicious decisions on your purchases. Equipment – A cardiac-quality stethoscope is required for all NP students. See web site for comparison of Littman stethoscopes: http://www.3m.com/Littmann/home.html Click on “Products” section. Another web site is: http://www.stethoscopes.com for a variety of medical equipment brands. Otoscope/ophthalmoscopes are optional, but highly recommended for NP students. They are especially useful if you plan to volunteer for health fairs, mission trips, or work as a parish nurse. The clinical learning lab has scopes that you may use in the lab or check out for a week to help with practicing skills. The panoptic for fundoscopy is also available in place of ophthalmoscopes, if you so desire (more expensive). PDAs are quite popular in many clinic settings especially for quick drug references. Although not required, one is highly recommended for all nurse practitioner students. All medical students order their equipment by early September. Therefore, if you can place your order with the medical students, you can receive excellent discounts through the bookstore. See Kathy Graham in the bookstore as soon as possible to receive the benefit of a discount.
